SAMQWAN Created and Choreographed by Sarah Prosper

Samqwan is the Mi’kmaq word for water and this new multi-disciplinary show, created and choreographed by Eskasoni artist Sarah Prosper, will inspire and welcome you to experience the value of water from an indigenous perspective; its sacredness, purposes, and to show the gift of walking in two worlds but also the responsibilities.

Ke'aknutama'tinej - Can we talk Ke'amakaltinej - Can we dance

Samqwan will feature an integrated cast of local performers and takes the HAT stage from August 17 to 22.

~ An Experiment in Radical Access ~

In the light of this unprecedented time, we are trying something Radical: We have become the first Professional, Community-Funded Theatre in Canada. Thanks to ongoing monthly donations from people across Cape Breton and - indeed - North America, we have committed to offering all 12 Mainstage plays and musicals free of charge for a year. If we can maintain or grow this model, we would love nothing more than to continue this model forever. But in order to do that, we need your help.

We aren't going to charge you a cent for this ticket, but if you haven't done so already, we highly encourage you to go to our website and make a pledge for ongoing monthly dontions (you can also do a one-time donation if you prefer).

You'll receive:

1) A tax-deductible charitable receipt 2) Advance access to book for future Mainstage Productions 3) The knowledge that you are supporting a professional arts organization in downtown Sydney and helping create free access for everyone in the community.

For more information or to make your pledge, check out: http://www.highlandartstheatre.com/radical-access

Tickets: FREE OF CHARGE (although suggested donations of $25/ticket are welcome)

If you book your tickets and then do not need them, please let us know no less than 6 hours before showtime by e-mailing us at: info@highlandartstheatre.com

COVID-19 Protocols:

We are very grateful to have had such low cases of COVID-19 in Cape Breton, however, it is essential that we do not become overly relaxed or complacent. We will be complying with all provincial and federal recommendations and guidelines (and then some!). Please be advised that protocols could change at any time pending provincial order or increased risk.

All audiences will be limited to 25% of our overall capacity (approx. 100 people per performance) Every seat will automatically be booked with a six-foot "bubble" around their seats to ensure mandatory physical distancing. Masks will be manditory upon entrance and throughout performance. Washrooms will be gender-neutral for the time being and heavily cleaned between performances. There will be no intermission, however, audiences will be permited to enter and exit as necessary to "freshen up". All facilities will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between performances.

We are committed to keeping our audience, staff, and artists safe and secure. If you have any feedback or concerns, please feel free to contact us at: info@highlandartstheatre.com

Thank you so much and see you soon at the HAT!
