Advanced Dance for Adults with Cynthia Vokey

Are you a dancer looking for a space to continue dancing with advanced peers outside of the competition space? Then we have just the class for you.

Brush off your dancing shoes with this new course designed for people who have a minimum of 8 years dance experience (though maybe haven’t been dancing regularly for some time). Whether you’ve recently graduated from your dance school or are looking to get back into dance shoes after an extended break, we’re here to get you back on the dance floor and dusting off those grande jettés.

Cynthia Vokey leads you through a variety of steps and combinations with something for everyone, with an emphasis on jazz, contemporary, musical theatre, and a variety of other styles. It’ll be challenging, fun, low-pressure, and will hopefully get you back in your comfort zone. Classes will be equally spent with one-off combinations as well as a long-term performance number which will be included in the HAT Mainstage production “All Together Now” this November. Participants must be 18 years of age or older.

Please Note: This is a performance-based class. This means that participants in this class will be involved in the Highland Arts Theatre’s November Mainstage production of All Together Now and must be available for the dates: Nov. 12th to 15th. If you are interested in taking the class but do not wish to participate in the final performance, an auditing version can be accommodated.

Advanced Dance for Adults will run on Wednesday evenings from 6:15 to 8:15PM starting September 29th, 2021 and running for 8 consecutive weeks.

If necessary, a make-up class will be scheduled during regular class time the week of November 22nd.

Cynthia Vokey started dancing at the age of 5 and now has 20 years of experience in many forms of dance including ballet, jazz, contemporary, tap, and musical theatre. While training with the Cape Breton School of the Arts, Cynthia had the opportunity to study under the A.D.A.P.T Dance Syllabus (Associated Dance Arts for Professional Teachers). In the past, Cynthia had the opportunity to travel to Spain with the Candance National Dance team and has taken intensive programs at places such as Toronto Dance Theatre and Broadway Dance Centre. Vokey also is a certified dance instructor and educator through the Associated Dance Arts for Professional Teachers syllabus where she received training in tap, jazz and ballet. She continues to teach locally in Cape Breton for dance schools, has been a guest teacher at Neptune Theatre in Halifax, choreographs many shows for The Savoy Theatre and is the Resident Choreographer at the Highland Arts Theatre. Vokey is a certified Barre Instructor and teaches for Breathing Space Yoga Studio. Cynthia was also chosen as a Chrysalis Project participant in the choreography stream with Neptune Theatre for their 2019/2020 season and worked on Peter Pan. Recent credits include, Disco Nights (HAT),Beauty and the Beast (Savoy Theatre); Dream (HAT); The Nutcracker (The Savoy Theatre); Rocky Horror Picture Show (The Savoy Theatre); The Drowsy Chaperone (HAT); and Grease (The Savoy Theatre).
