Scriptwriting and the Fundamentals of Storytelling for Beginners with Alex Poirier

No prior creative writing experience necessary — no homework, no tests!

"Scriptwriting and the Fundamentals of Storytelling for Beginners" is all about the art of crafting good stories: stories that engage us, stories that make us laugh, make us cry, and make us stand up and cheer at performance's end.

Acclaimed actor/writer Alex Poirier, whose HAT credits include The Drowsy Chaperone, Little Shop of Horrors, Pride and Prejudice, Cabaret, and his own self-penned stage show Tough Call, will be your guide for this entertaining and informative exploration of scriptwriting structure — stage plays and screenplays, both — and the crucial elements that make up all your favourite stories, from character and conflict to set-ups and pay-offs (and everything in between).

What's more, you'll see these elements in action through excerpts from some of the most acclaimed motion pictures in Hollywood history, including classics like Back to the Future and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, as well as recent television hits like HBO's Chernobyl and Netflix's Stranger Things.

You'll see how characters, conflict, theme, and plot combine and complement each other to create the movies, shows, and plays you love. You’ll peer back 400 years to see how Shakespeare shook the world with his stories. You'll learn how Stephen King keeps giving you the creepy-crawlies. And, over the course of eight weeks, you might even be inspired to try your hand at crafting your own tales, whatever form they may take.

Participants must be 18 years of age or older.

Classes for Improv for Adults will run on Monday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30PM starting April 17th and running for 8 consecutive weeks.

If necessary, a storm day make-up class will be scheduled.
